- 2 oz Bourbon
- 1½ oz Espresso (or very strong Coffee)
- ¼ oz Averna Amaro
- 1 Egg (or Pasteurized Liquid Egg)
- 1-2 tsp Granulated Sugar
- Add everything, except the egg, to a Cocktail Shaker and swirl to dissolve the sugar (about 15 seconds). Add the egg with ice and shake vigorously. Strain into a Coupe Glass.
- Top with grated Nutmeg.
Ever wonder why your co-worker is so happy and chipper in the morning? It’s likely because he’s sipping this concoction out of his coffee mug! One could argue that this is the perfect breakfast. You have your coffee. You have your egg. You have your bourbon. What else do you need? If not for breakfast, enjoy it as we do: as a dessert cocktail after dinner or for the perfect nightcap. The Averna (a subtly bitter Italian amaro) adds nice depth with its subtle notes of coffee and cocoa. This is a coffee drink, so sweeten it as you would your coffee. Use at lease 1 teaspoon of sugar; we prefer two. You want to taste the character of the coffee so use granulated sugar instead of watering-down the drink with a simple syrup.
