The original Alexander was made with gin! Today we like it smoother and less botanical, so we use brandy or, if you’re wearing a béret, Cognac. (If you prefer wearing a party hat, you can check out our blended version too!) The origins of this drink are foggy and, for some reason, all deal with guys named Alexander! Go figure! Some say it was named after the Russian Czar Alexander II. Film critic and commentator Alexander Woollcott claims it was named after him. We could go on-and-on! It suffices to say, however, that if your name is Al, you’re welcome to claim this drink as your own too!
