Beatnik
2015-03-08Ingredients
- 1 oz Bourbon
- 1½ oz Averna Amaro
- ½ oz Tawny (or Ruby) Port
- 1 dash Peychaud’s Bitters
- Add all ingredients, with ice, to a mixing glass. Stir to chill and strain into a rocks glass over a large ice cube. Top with a twist of orange skin, discarding the rind.
Not to be confused with our Beetnik cocktail (which utilizes beets), this drink, created by Duggan McDonnell, is a creative take on the classic Manhattan. It offers up a nice bold bourbon flavor with pleasant cocoa and coffee notes, from the Averna, which, itself, is enhanced by the sweetness and character of the port. A tawny port provides caramel and raisin notes, while a ruby port enlivens the drink with glycerin and plum overtones and allows the bourbon to shine even more. We prefer to use the ruby port, but both make for a delicious drink. The original recipe calls for the drink to be served straight up with a flaming orange twist. We prefer to strain it into a rocks glass over a large ice cube. Enjoy.
