Prickly Pear Cactus Margarita

2013-11-08

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Tequila
  • 1 Prickly Pear pod, peeled
  • ½ oz Fresh Lime Juice
  • ½ oz Cointreau
  • ½ oz Agave Nectar

  • In the glass of a Boston shaker, muddle the prickly pear pod in the tequila. Add the remaining ingredients, with ice, and shake vigorously. Strain into a margarita glass.

  • Garnish with a Lime Wheel or Prickly Pear Pod Slice.

This is probably one of the few drinks for which you’ll be muddling a tuna. No! Not the fish! The prickly pear fruit is actually called a tuna. We call it a pod, and that is what you want to muddle – not the flat, prickly pad from which the tuna grows. Do that, and you’ll be plucking cactus thorns out of your tongue for weeks! The tunas (pods) come in red or green/yellow. We like the red fruits for their incredible color. Check out the picture. What a thing of beauty! and taste!
