Ingredients

  • 2 oz Bourbon (or Rye)
  • 1 tsp Sugar (or 1 sugar cube)
  • 1 splash Water
  • 3 dashes Angostura Bitters

  • Add all ingredients to an Old Fashioned glass and stir or muddle to dissolve the sugar. Add an ice cube or two.

  • Garnish with an Orange Twist.

The Old Fashioned not only sounds classic, it is classic. The classic! Arguably, the original “cocktail.” The first documented use of the word “cocktail” was in the May 3, 1806 edition of a Hudson, New York newspaper in which the editor was responding to a reader’s query asking: “What is a cocktail?” He described it as a concoction with “spirits…sugar, water, and bitters.” The term “Old Fashioned” wasn’t coined until the late 1880’s, but it names this most classic of “cocktails.” To learn more, hit the books at Cocktail College. It’s free, it’s fun, ’cause it’s us!
