The Jack Rose is a tart and tasty pre-prohibition era classic. It was drink ordered by Jack Barnes in Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises, and it has a fun and fabled history. Though it would have traditionally been made with lemon juice, we (and most others today) prefer lime. Applejack (once called Jersey Lightening) was traditionally made by concentrating hard cider by freeze distillation – a method known as “jacking.” Allowing the cider to freeze and discarding the ice (water) produces your concentrated spirit. Almost everyone of the era named “Jack” (and even one guy named “Frank”) claimed this cocktail was named after him. We believe its name came from the fact that the main ingredient is appleJACK and that the grenadine makes for an end-product as crimson as a beautiful rose. Regardless, this classic has stood the test of time and is truly a delightful cocktail. If you’re looking for something CRAZY, check out our Apple Jacks Rose. Enjoy!
