Angostura Sour

2015-04-17

Ingredients

  • 1 Egg White (or 1 ½ oz Liquid Egg Whites)
  • ¾ oz Fresh Lemon juice
  • 1½ oz Angostura Bitters
  • 1¼ oz Simple Syrup

  • Vigorously shake the egg white and lemon juice in a Cocktail Shaker (without ice) for 30 seconds. Add the biters and simple syrup, with ice, and shake for another 20-30 seconds. Strain into a coupe glass.

What!?! Angostura bitters as the main ingredient. Have you gone mad? Though we’re not certain where this outrageous cocktail originated, we have suspicions it may hail from the shores of Trinidad & Tobago (where these time-tested bitters are made). Think about it! Convincing us to use their bitters by the ounce rather than the drop can do wonders for their bottom lime. Enjoyed most recently at the Heritage Tavern in Madison, Wisconsin, this complex-tasting cocktail is overflowing with flavor! Serve it without a garnish in the Spring and Summer, but throw on a holly leaf or rosemary sprig in the Fall and Winter as the cinnamon and cardamom spices which perfume this drink make for a wonderful holiday cocktail.
