Aviation

Ingredients

  • 3 oz Gin
  • ¾ oz Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur
  • 1 oz Lemon Juice
  • ½ oz Crème de Violette

  • Shake all ingredients with ice in a Cocktail Shaker. Strain into a Coupe Glass.

  • Garnish with a Lemon Twist.

This classic was created by Hugo Ensslin and featured in his 1916 tome: Recipes for Mixed Drinks. This cocktail came about during the dawn of aviation – when you were more apt to see a zeppelin floating about above you than a winged passenger craft. The beautiful color contributed by the crème de violette gives the drink its classic hue – that of a sky at dusk. Though it sounds lighter-than-air, this drink provides a good measure of gin and will have you either floating or crashing to the ground should you have too many! Cheers!
