Sbaglitao (pronounced Sblah-YAW-toe) is Italian for a “casual mistake,” or “blunder.” Created right around 1950 at Milan’s Bar Basso, it is claimed that the Negroni Sbaglitao came to life when the bartender mistakenly poured champagne, instead of gin, while making a Negroni. Though it makes for an amusing story, we’re not buying it. As this cocktail more closely resembles the Negroni’s father – the Americano, with it’s soda water, sweet vermouth, and campari – the idea to swap fizzy Champagne for the fizzy soda water seems more logical. As for the name, by the 1950’s, the Americano was out-of-fashion, and to name this cocktail after the more popular Negroni only makes sense. Delicious, fun, and fizzy with bold bitterness and both deep and bright sweetness, this cocktail is wonderful!
